Our partnership with illy goes beyond the product and reflects a largely shared vision statement and values, particularly when it comes to sustainability issues. This joint commitment to social sustainability underlies our support for illy’s project for the education and emancipation of women working in the coffee chain.

Singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette is one of the artists who has contributed to the new illy Art Collection, inspired by A Small Section of the World, a documentary film produced by illycaffè in 2014 and portraying the perseverance of a group of resourceful women from a remote farming region of Costa Rica whose ideas sparked a revolution in the coffee growing world. The song “The Morning”, specially composed for the film, was co-written by Alanis Morissette and the lyrics decorate the espresso cup and saucer.

A Small Section of the World, made by Academy Award-winning director Lesley Chilcott, is based on the true story of the creation of Asomobi Asociación de Mujeres Organizadas de Biolley (ASOMOBI), Costa Rica’s first ever cooperative of women coffee growers. It recounts how a small group of brave women decided to fight back against the economic crisis in their small community by building a coffee mill. A tale of passion and tenacity, A Small Section of the World is about women’s empowerment and how a cup of coffee can transform lives.
Previewing specially on our ships, the brand new illy Art Collection box set (coffee cups and DVD) will be available on board from mid-April; part of the proceeds will be used to fund further initiatives for the education and emancipation of women working in the coffee chain.
