Our project has come to Civitavecchia and so, for the first time, one of the most important ports in Italy and the Mediterranean as a whole has joined this program based on retrieving the leftover excellent quality food that is prepared on board but not served in Costa ships' restaurants.
Since December 1 we've been supporting “Repubblica dei Ragazzi” in Civitavecchia. The mission of this foster care group home is to provide assistance, education and training to young people in difficulty by helping them run their own community, while accompanying these abandoned children and troubled youths on training paths designed to facilitate the school-to-work transition.
This latest development is part of our efforts to involve more ports and strengthen ties with the neighboring communities also in terms of solidarity. To date, in 20 calls at Savona we've already donated over 1600 kg of excellent quality food, which works out to more than 8500 meal portions!
“La Repubblica dei Ragazzi Onlus” Director Padre Rafael Diaz said,“We've been providing accommodation and support for disadvantaged youth for more than 70 years. Our home uses an innovative educational model of self-determination empowering these young people, who are assigned responsibility for the management of some of the organizational aspects of the shelter, helping them to mature and become more self-sufficient. As you can imagine, our maintenance costs are very high. For this reason all forms of help, such as the assistance we've started receiving now from Costa Cruises through the food bank charity Banco Alimentare, are welcome insofar as they enable us to adequately meet the daily needs of those who depend on us.”
