The World Maritime Day theme for 2019 is “Empowering Women in the Maritime Community”; World Maritime Day is celebrated every year by the United Nations through the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The role of women and the importance of gender equality in the shipping industry will be the subject of a major event taking place on Friday, October 25 on board Costa Fortuna in the Port of Genoa.

This one-day conference is being promoted by Costa Cruises together with WISTA Italia and the International Propeller Club Genova under the patronage of the Genoa Harbor Master’s Office, the Collegio dei Capitani and the Federazione del Mare (Italian Shipping Federation).
The keynote speakers at the seminar will be “Women in uniform at sea”, including Giulia Lo Storto, 3rd Deck Officer on Costa Fortuna, and many other prominent women pursuing careers in shipping.

The workshop will highlight the valuable contribution, still too often under-utilized and given little visibility, of women within the maritime industry. In fact, their contribution, both shoreside and on board, spurs growth and development, and benefitseveryone working in the global maritime community in the drivetowards safe, secure, clean and sustainable shipping.
