Costa Cruises does its utmost to protect, respect and enhance the local communities in the destinations that it sails to on a regular basis. The company liaises directly with local organizations to devise and plan its itineraries and tours to the most significant places with the total involvement of local organizations. Also, checks are conducted to ensure that the excursions concerned guarantee total respect for the environment and the local community. This philosophy of responsible tourism enhancing cultural exchange and knowledge of destinations that are off the beaten track is reflected in the planning of a specific program of eco-tours to unspoiled areas that are usually protected (parks, oases and nature reserves).
There are currently more than 300 of these low environmental impact eco-tours and the number is growing every year (among the most recent additions are Trapani, Kalamata, Corigliano Calabro, Propriano, Kotor and Napulia). The idea is to let participants enjoy nature-based tourism, where possible using alternative zero-impact means of transport to explore the places visited – all this while fostering environmental and cultural understanding, appreciation and conservation.
Guests can go canoeing in the barrier reef, cycling in Helsinki, horse riding in the Barbados and camel trekking in the desert, to name but a few of the eco-tour adventures arranged by Costa Cruises in keeping with our idea of ecologically sustainable tourism.
