Zadar was one of the most important cities of the maritime Republic of Venice for centuries. The port is located in the old town, which overlooks a large bay to the northwest, while the tourist area is in the north. The major tourist attractions of Croatia are just a short hop from Zadar: Plitvice Lakes National Park, Paklenica National Park, the waterfalls in the Krka National Park, Kornati National Park and the Telašćica Nature Park. Zadar's old town, based on the Roman urban structure, houses the main monuments of Venetian origin dating back to the mediaeval period. A curiosity: the city possesses a unique sea organ that uses the movement of the waves to produce melodious sounds.
