Description A tour to discover the nature and history of the Shimabara peninsula. Starting at the ancient castle, scene of a bloody rebellion by the Christians, we travel back in time to the era of the Samurai and then spend a few hours relaxing at the Unzen hot spring as we savour a typical Japanese traditional dish.

What we will see
  • Shimabara castle
  • Ancient Samurai homes in Shimabara
  • Unzen hot springs
  • Shabu shabu traditional lunch

What we will do
  • We leave the port behind us on a coach headed east. We proceed on the road stretching along Ariake Bay as far as the Shimabara peninsula and stop in the city of the same name. Here, we visit Shimabara castle, built in the 17th century and later completely destroyed and rebuilt. Only four km of walls surrounding the castle remain of the original complex. Inside, we discover testimonies of the rebellion of 1637, when the Christians rebelled against the religious oppression of the Tokugawa Shogunate, as well as swords, armours and other artefacts from the Edo period.
  • After the visit, we move on to the oldest part of Shimabara to delve into the world of the Samurai. We visit the Samurai village where a reconstruction of the dwellings of these Japanese warriors evokes the atmosphere of times gone by.
  • We then reach the Unzen hot spring, a lovely place boasting sulphur springs that attracts numerous tourists and residents willing to enjoy a few hours of relaxation. A volcano erupted here in 1991, but its history is also linked to the tragic martyrdom of the Catholics during the 17th century. We also have the chance to enjoy a pleasant dip in the hot spring, but first we stop in a local restaurant to savour a shabu shabu lunch, a traditional Japanese dish with meat and steamed vegetables.
  • After a few hours of relaxation, the coach takes us back to the ship.
