What we will do
- We leave the port behind us and head towards the beautiful city of Otranto on the eastern coast of the Salento peninsula, where it was founded thousands of years ago by the ancient Greeks. * A guided tour takes us outside the Aragonese Castle, an imposing building that surrounds the historic city centre with its irregular pentagonal shape interrupted by three round towers. * We then visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria Annunciata, consecrated in 1088 and a synthesis of different architectural styles as it combines Byzantine, Paleochristian and Romanesque elements.
- The interior is made up of a central nave with two aisles and columns believed to come from a temple dedicated to Minerva in ancient times and an elegant floor mosaic dating back to 1166 depicting the seasons and scenes from the Old Testament. There is also a crypt supported by 42 marble columns.
