Starting with the Costa Magica’s call in Barcelona on Thursday, November 22, another major Mediterranean port has been added to Costa Cruises and Fondazione Banco Alimentare’s program for the recovery and redistribution to charity of the surplus food produced but not consumed on board the ships in the Costa fleet.
Thanks to the participation of the Federación Española de Bancos de Alimentos and the Fundaciò Banc dels Aliments de Barcelona, the food that is prepared but not served in the ship’s buffet will be donated to two local associations that help people in need: the Hogar Nuestra Señora de Lourdes retirement home and the Fundació Acollida i Esperança, which provides shelter and care for the disadvantaged and those at risk of social exclusion.
This is another milestone for Costa Cruises’ surplus food donation scheme, which was launched in July 2017 and has enabled Costa to distribute more than 70,000 portions of “ready to eat” food with great nutritional value to people in need in Savona, Civitavecchia, Bari, Palermo and Marseille.
The addition of Barcelona is another step in the international expansion of Costa’s scheme, the first of its kind in world shipping, the Catalonian capital being the latest in a series of ports taking part in Italy and beyond.
