Costa reveals Italy’s most picturesque small towns

For us at Costa, promoting responsible tourism is a cornerstone of our commitment to sustainability. An example of this is our partnership with the association called I Borghi più belli d’Italia (“Italy’s finest small towns”), which has given rise to an initiative called “Historic towns, a heritage to be discovered and fostered”. With the objective of favoring ecotourism and supporting the local economy, this project is designed to take our international cruise guests to see some of Italy’s hidden jewels – little gems, places that are still relatively unknown despite their huge artistic and cultural assets – and to provide them with a truly authentic, one-off experience. Ten towns have been chosen for these new organized tours: Seborga and Montemarcello in Liguria; Arquà Petrarca in Veneto; Orvieto in Umbria; Civita di Bagnoregio in Latium; Locorotondo in Puglia; Castiglione di Sicilia, Montalbano Elicona and Salemi in Sicily; and Atrani in Campania. The visits will consist of walking tours arranged jointly with the local administrations: cruisers will be escorted by local guides, who will help them discover and enjoy the artistic treasures of each small town, the local history and traditions; visitors’ appreciation will be enhanced by food&wine offerings and the chance to see local craftsmen at work. In line with our idea of sustainable tourism, the tours will run mainly on weekdays and also in the off season, giving our guests a more laid back and authentic experience and at the same time generating year-round business for the local tourist industry and the local economy as a whole.
