'THE FORTRESS OF MASADA AND THE DEAD SEA': Excursion in Haifa
This excursion will take you from the port of Haifa to Masada, which is still a symbol of Jewish national identity today despite the forced emigration that the Jews have suffered over the millennia since the diaspora of 66 BC. Following arrival at Masada, a short cable car ride will take you to the top of the mountain from which you can admire a breathtakingly beautiful view over the surrounding rocky desert and the Dead Sea. Your guide will take you to the top of the mountain, where you will be able to visit the ruins of the ancient fortress built by Herod the Great in 42 BC as a potential refuge in the case of the revolt of the Jews or riots incited by Mark Antony and Cleopatra. In 73 BC, following the fall of Jerusalem, more than 960 Jews, including soldiers, women and children, barricaded themselves inside the fortress to protect themselves from attack by the Roman army. When the Romans stormed the fortress the Jews preferred mass suicide to slavery. After this fascinating and dramatic lesson in history you can enjoy the relaxing and magical salty waters of the Dead Sea, which formed over 2 million years ago in a depression 400 metres below sea level. You will have the chance to relax and refresh yourself with a delicious cold buffet in a modern hotel before enjoying the unique experience of floating in the therapeutic waters of the Dead Sea.
